Is your SL avatar a projection of yourself?

I am currently reading Peter Bradwell's The Edgeless University, there is a lot of information in it and I'll write a review when I finish it. But today I was reading a sub-section entitled: Learning in an immaterial world, the opening sentence starts:
"Second Life, an immersive virtual world in which people control avatars (digital projections of themselves)..."

Amazon holding a job fair in Second Life

"The very first Amazon Job Fair in Second Life will take place on Tuesday July 14th and will run from 6 AM to Midnight, PST." according to their blog. This looks as though it may be an interesting way of recruiting, but I guess would be candidates who are not familiar with Second Life need to have plenty of practice time to ensure they move smoothly and have the right interview appearance.

Managing Meetings in Second Life

In many ways setting up a meeting in Second Life is much the same as arranging one in real life, but there are some challenges that the organisers may not realise. It was a chance remark over Twitter that led to Pauline Randall and I writing "Managing Meetings in Second Life: The Protocol Guide", the guide is available at Scribd.

Google Translate

LLL3D is a project that is looking at better understanding how Virtual Worlds can be used in Lifelong learning.
On the LLL3D web site we have just put Google Translate, we also have the facility that links any posts I make on RedGloo, tagged with LLL3D to the LLL3D site.
This screenshot shows a couple of my posts now showing in French.

Drug Busting

There is an interesting blog post at New World Notes. A consultancy group has built a simulation of a meths lab in the hope that law enforcement agencies will use it to train staff to recognise a meths lab when they see one.  The simulation was created from sets of photos.

It looks to be of interest to anyone interested in educational use of virtual worlds such as Second Life.

Veterans Collaborate In Virtual World

I have just read an article Veterans Collaborate In Virtual World about an island in SL for veterans of the US military giving them a place to meet with comrades and share information. In 18 months they have gone from 40 members to 700.
The island is paid for and maintained by 5 founding members, they hold fund-raisers such as beach parties in world and selling virtual objects such as T shirts.

Talks on E-Business and Online Marketing in Twinity

There are lots of examples of businesses in Second Life, I haven't seen much about other worlds and business so i was interested to see that Twinity were offering a series of talks by the University of Heilbronn, Germany,  starting on May 13th, at 19.00 CET. The sessions will be in German, so not for me as my understanding is very basic.
